Sustainable infrastructure – A foundation for the survival of the Wixarika culture

The Wixárika communities in Mexico face enormous challenges that threaten their culture and way of life. In addition to migration to urban areas, many villages lack basic infrastructure such as water, energy, telecommunications, and accessible roads. Without these elements, it is difficult for families to remain in their territories and live sustainably.

A solid infrastructure not only meets essential needs, it also creates local jobs, improves quality of life, and strengthens community autonomy.

Water: the basis of life

Water is vital to life and to Wixárika culture. For generations, corn was the pillar of food and spirituality, but climate change has altered rainfall cycles, drastically reducing harvests. Without enough water, it is not possible to plant crops or sustain livestock, which increases dependence on external food sources and forces many young families to migrate to cities.

Clean energy for autonomous communities

Without reliable energy, opportunities for development are very limited. Many Wixárika villages still lack stable access to electricity, which affects education, health, and the local economy. Our approach is to implement solar energy and other clean sources that give communities independence and reduce their vulnerability to the lack of public services.

Telecommunications: connecting with the world

The isolation of communities is exacerbated by the lack of telecommunications. A reliable telephone and internet network not only provides access to information and education, but also strengthens the community fabric and opens up new opportunities for collaboration with partners in Mexico and abroad.

Roads: access to services and opportunities

Many Wixárika communities are connected only by dirt roads in poor condition, which makes it difficult to transport food, medicine, and construction materials. Safe and sustainable roads are essential to ensuring access to health care, education, and local markets.

Our commitment to sustainable infrastructure

The dam restoration project in San Andrés Cohamiata is only the first step. At Yurienaka Parewiwame, we are working toward a sustainable and independent infrastructure model that includes water, energy, telecommunications, and roads. All with a single goal: to ensure that the Wixárika community can live off their culture, on their own territory, and in harmony with Mother Earth.
