Cultural preservation – Safeguarding the spiritual legacy of the Wixarikas

The knowledge archive: Preserving cultural heritage

In addition to protecting sacred sites, our organization is working on a knowledge archive. Our team documents the wisdom of elders to preserve it for future generations. The interviews and documentation are turned into educational materials that help the Wixarikas maintain and pass on their traditions.

Support the protection of Wixikuta and the knowledge archive

By supporting our project, you contribute to preserving the spiritual and cultural legacy of the Wixarika community. Your donations go directly to the protection of Wixikuta and the development of the knowledge archive. Join this initiative and help preserve one of the oldest cultures in the world.

The Wixarika culture is one of the richest and oldest indigenous cultures still surviving in the world. Its spiritual rituals, orally transmitted stories, and deep knowledge of nature and the universe have been preserved for generations. However, this unique culture is now in danger. Younger generations often have to leave their villages to work in cities, causing them to lose access to their cultural heritage. At the same time, the elders, the guardians of this knowledge, are dying without having been able to pass on enough to the next generation.

Wixikuta – A sacred land in danger

A central element of Wixarika culture is the annual pilgrimages to sacred sites, of which Wixikuta is the most important. This land in central Mexico is home to the Hikuri (Peyote), a sacred plant that plays a central role in the spiritual rituals of the Wixarikas. Through the Hikuri, spiritual leaders (Marakame) access divine wisdom, which they use for the well-being of their community and the entire world.

However, Wixikuta is in danger. Companies are invading the region and destroying the Hikuri biosphere, even though the area is internationally protected. This hinders the sacred pilgrimages of the Wixarikas and endangers the spiritual practice of their culture.

Our protection project for Wixikuta

Yurienaka Parewiwame is committed to protecting Wixikuta. Ten percent of our income goes directly toward protecting this area. Together with partner organizations, we purchase land to secure it for the Wixarikas and ensure that their pilgrimages can continue in the future.
