WHAT YOU NEED FOR PIANO LESSONS

All piano students need a keyboard or piano, adjustable stool, music stand, sustain pedal, and piano stand. Many new keyboards come in bundles that include most of these items.

To make it easy, we’ve linked our recommended options below — just click the images to view our picks.

If you’re considering a different model, feel free to contact us to make sure it meets the necessary requirements.

When starting piano lessons, there are two keyboard options: a starter keyboard or a weighted digital piano.

Starter keyboards (61–76 keys, non-weighted) are a short-term solution suitable for up to 6 months. After that, students are required to transition to a fully weighted digital piano (88 keys).

Requirements for their piano by 6 months of lessons include:

weighted keys

full size, 88 keys

sustain pedal input

This first section includes three options for a fully weighted, full size digital piano that meets these requirements.

IF YOU ONLY NEED THE KEYBOARD

If you already have the other necessities or wish to purchase separately:

NEED A MORE AFFORDABLE OPTION?

The following options are temporary and will work well for your child’s first six months of lessons.

By the six-month mark, students must transition to a weighted-key digital piano (or an acoustic piano) in order to build proper hand technique.

Non-weighted or semi-weighted keyboards may seem fine at first, but they don’t give the right resistance or feel. Over time, this causes students to use incorrect movements, making it difficult to play:

Loudly (no finger strength),

Quickly (poor control), or

For longer periods (hand fatigue).

Once those habits set in, they can be very hard to correct—so the right instrument matters early!

You can start with one of the beginner options below to make sure your student enjoys lessons and stays consistent before investing in a longer-term instrument.
